Is there anyone who doesn't have a cell phone?

May 20, 2009

Research has shown that mobile devices are the most commonly owned technology of prospective students. Depending on geographic location and grade level in school, the percentage of prospective students who carry a mobile phone is 90% (and this percent is much higher in many cases).  That is higher than a PC, laptop, mp3 player, camera, gaming device - you name it. Mobile phones are now a standard.

Yesterday, I spoke with the Vice President for Enrollment Management at 4-year private university. Turns out one of her admitted students was homeless.  It is truly tremendous to see that an academically qualified prospective student with such great financial need is able to get a good education. That is not the point of this blog post, however.

So what is my point?

Although that student was homeless - she had a cell phone.

More from the High School Student Lifestyle Survey.

Mobile updates are 100% opt-in text messages that are used to communicate with prospective students throughout the admissions process.

Students were asked: "If a college that you are interested in offered to send you alerts and information via TXT, would you choose to receive:"

Extrapolating that data - in general the majority of students would opt-in for mobile updates.
