"Look Mom.. a scholarship!"

January 17, 2010

The majority of St. Mary University's 'highly interested' prospective students have opt-ed in to "mobile updates".  During the month of January, prospective students are (via text message):

  • invited to specific events
  • reminded about the early application deadline
  • invited to special campus visits
  • encouraged to join the accepted student online community

All of these messages are helpful and will surely encourage the desired action.  However, I believe, the scholarship notification message below will elicit the most emotional response.  Great work!

Text "haiti" to 90999

January 16, 2010

The American Red Cross and the US State Department had to choose the best medium to encourage the public to get involved in disaster relief fundraising.  Notice, they did not give people a web site to visit, they did not ask people to call anyone.  They went for the simpler, more effective approach: Text "haiti" to 90999.

I made a personal donation and have included the correspondence below.

Staying Top of Mind

January 4, 2010

The majority of text communications in the recruitment process are "important" and "extremely helpful" (e.g. event in your home town, test scores received, campus visit coming up...).  Building that helpful relationship first allows your institution the liberty to be more candid.. more personal... a message just to say 'hello'. St. Mary's University found an excellent time to say hello.. and happy New Year.
